Let us know why you love children’s stories/books and win a pass to TypeaMom Conference

by Maya on September 8, 2010

This contest is now closed. Congrats to Kat – who won the ticket to #typeaMom from Memetales!

Life happens and plans change. As much as I would love to be at TypeAMom Conference I just cannot make the time for it.  Work is way too busy and the summer travel and a stretch of sick days in the family did not help. So there. I figure I could make someone happy if I gave away my ticket sooner than later, right??

@JennyOnTheSpot !

The Giveaway!

Memetales will give away one TypeAMom Conference Pass to one lucky winner!! If you know anything about Kelby Carr, you know you want to be there. She is warm and down to earth and that is exactly how the conference is going to be. To make it even better, the best of people(and speakers!) will be there. Jenny Ingram (my awesomest sparkly girl and super vlogger)  will talk about blogging with humor and Aliza Sherman is giving the keynote!!

What you need to do is very simple ….

How to Enter (changed)

Oh my, I could write you pages about children’s books. I grew up as the daughter of an English teacher, with a grandmother who taught first grade. My house was immersed in books from the get go. My gram would always bring us tons of new books from her book orders, and I learned to read long before kindergarten. I can still picture our kindergarten classroom with its “reading bathtub”, an old fashioned clawfooted tub, painted green with yellow flowers and filled with pillows & blankets to snuggle up & read.

Lots of books stand out from my childhood, most of which my own children now own, sometimes my copies, sometimes new ones if mine didn’t survive. My favorite as a toddler, per my mom, was Richard Scarry’s The Best Word Book Ever. She used to hide it just to get a break from reading it. In second grade, she ordered me the Little House on the Prairie series. Over that year, I read the whole series, which has been reread many times, including this past spring. Mine is still somewhere at my mom & dad’s, so I bought the whole series to read to my own daughter. She also has a copy of The Hundred Dresses, The Best Loved Doll, Anne of Green Gables, A Little Princess, and numerous others I loved as a child.

So to answer the original question, why I love children’s books? The memories–reading to my kids the same stories my mom & dad & grandma read to me, reading them amazing new books that I hope they will someday want to read to their own children, remembering the excitement of getting a big bag of books for my birthday & Christmas, going through the Scholastic order from school and circling all the books I just *had* to have, and just the sheer magical power of the printed word.

Thanks for the opportunity, I would love to attend, it’s on my wishlist, but was thinking it was pretty much just a dream without something amazing happening.

I also added you on Twitter (@shannoncarino, despite my love of the printed word, I am less than creative in naming things) and on FB (same name, add a space).

Not sure if these need to be separate entries or not, I interpreted it as 1 required entry and 1 optional only, but FB and Twitter looked interesting to add. :o )

children’s stories? CHILDREN’S STORIES? I’ll tell you why. Because when I see the enraptured faces of the five year old’s I teach, and they are smiling and engaged and happy- then I KNOW the power of the story.

I know the author has touched their heart, has made them laugh, and has given them a little seed that will grow.

And my job is to water that seed- with any OTHER children’s book that I can get my hands on.

Books? Well, they’re gold to me.

why do I love children’s stories… they are the glue that holds my family together. They remind me what it is to be a kid, and they have been a key part in engaging with my son Max who has a diagnosis of Autism:

My neorotypical daughter Cameron also loves stories (she is very outspoken about her love):
