Toolkit Tuesdays are filled with ideas to teach and learn with your kids!
Today is World Read Aloud Day and we thought we should share some fun resources for you. Reading aloud to your kids develops their imagination, comprehension as well as their language skills.
Reading aloud resources are especially important to me as because
- there are SO many languages I want my kids to get familiar with (Indian languages, Spanish etc) that I cannot fluently speak myself. Youtube is great but I really want my children to learn to “listen”.
- there is such a HUGE world of stories and songs out there – many I do not even know myself. Always fun to find stories from the remote parts of the world!
Here are my favorite resources -
MrsP
Mrs P has an amazing site with completely free read aloud stories for kids. My girls love the site and Mrs P
MobiStories
MobiStories is a fun site – they started with little videos of read aloud books and have since expanded to support iphone and a number of devices. A great resource for on-the-go reading
Tales2Go
Tales2Go is a first-of-its-kind subscription audio story application available in the Apple App Store, which gives moms and dads instant, on-demand access to nearly a thousand kids’ audio stories to stream to their iPhone and/or iPod Touch. Tales2Go plans to roll out to other smartphone platforms (e.g., Blackberry, Palm Pre and Android) in the coming months. They also recently partnered with Scholastic! I love Tales2Go – a very simple interface and LOTs of great content.
Pratham Books
Pratham Books – is a non-profit trust that publishes high quality books for children at affordable prices and in multiple Indian languages. I love Pratham because they are really innovating with the Creative Commons Forat. Recently, they collaborated with Radio Mirchi to create audio books for the visually challenged. Read more about it here and also listen to the wonderful audio stories that came out of it!
SHAMELESS PLUG WARNING!
memetales
Ofcourse, we would LOVE for you to use our very own Memetales site as well – just sit back, flip some pages and read aloud to your child. Kids just LOVE reading with adults. Even better, make a video of your experience and share it back on Memetales. We would LOVE to feature you!
