Creating Story Props – Collaging

by Maya on March 29, 2010

My kids love to create things and they love more than anything to tell stories. We have found a way to do both of those together – create animals through collage and use them for our stories.

The children love it – and it is incredibly inexpensive and simple.

All it takes is some plain paper, sketches, glue and some colorful fliers, magazines or newspapers.

1. Start with some fun colorful fliers

2.Draw a picture of an animal – we went with an elephant. We also made a tiger since I have 2 girls. Of course, they just HAD to color the elephant first.

3. Tear the color paper with your hands. Mix it up. Put little drops on glue and let the child follow by placing paper over the glue.

4. Do not worry about getting it right. Believe me, this will look perfect in the end. It always does. Use a pen/marker to color the ears, eyes and so on.

5. Cover the whole area. Once all done, cut along the outer boundaries.

6. Let your animals dry completely.

7. Within the next hour, the collage is all dry and ready for storytelling.

We will share our story here very soon!

Have you ever tried a collage with the kids? What other ways have you created story props?
